How to Reach Yamunotri Temple and History: Yamunotri is one of the four shrines of Uttarakhand, This temple is located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand state of India in the west of Garhwal Himalaya at an altitude of 3235 meters above sea level. The Yamuna also called the daughter of Lord Surya (Suryadeva), is also originated from the Himalayas, so the Yamuna river is also considered as holy as the Ganga river. Yamunotri temple is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, who is considered as the mother of mankind. The Yamuna is one of the major rivers of India, Yamuna river is a part of three sister rivers which included Ganga and Saraswati.

The temple of Yamunotri was built in 1839 by Tehri Naresh Sudarshan Shah but was severely damaged by snow and floods and after that at the end of the 19th century, the temple was built by Queen Guleria of Jaipur.  The Yamunotri temple also opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya which falls in the month of May and closes on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Dooj which falls in the month of November or after 2 days of Diwali. Yamunotri temple is also open for six months and remains closed for six months.

The black marble statue of Mother Yamuna sits in the main house of the temple where Yamunotri Ji is worshiped done by priests. Pind Daan is a special significance in Yamunotri Dham where many people do Pind Daan of their ancestors. The real source of Yamuna river is a frozen ice lake and glacier (Champasar Glacier) which is situated on the Kalind mountain at an altitude of 4421 meters above sea level and snow falls from the Kalind mountain from very high as the waterfalls here. from this, the name of Yamuna is Kalindi. According to Uttarakhand Chardham yatra Yamunotri is the first stop for the Char Dham Yatra and the famous place of near Yamunotri are Surya Kund, Kharsaali and Janki Chatti.

How to Reach Yamunotri Temple

By Road:  If you want to visit Yamunotri temple, You can easily reach Yamunotri Temple,  It is located 418 km from Delhi and 216 km from Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). if you or your driver has a mountain driving license then you can also take your own vehicle.

By AirPlane: The nearest International airport to Yamunotri is Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun, which is 197 km away from Yamunotri.

By Train: The nearest railway station is at Rishikesh, it is 250 km from Yamunotri. From here you can take a bus or taxi to reach Yamunotri.
