Indian Army is like a big banyan tree which is divided into many small and large regiments, units, divs, battalions and headquarters according to the zone & states. All units and headquarters (HQ) are itself self-sufficient and running family in their own territory. Each unit has many soldiers of about 600 to 1000 approx, who are performing their duties as per the trade was given to them. Each unit has its own different departments like stores, offices, langers, vehicles, gardens, etc. Thus, it needed a large number of soldiers staff to run all these department’s work smoothly. Soldier tradesman is one of the important parts of Indian Army which includes various trade under it.

Soldier Tradesman Trades:

  • Chef, Store hand, hair dresser, ferrier, animal store holders, pioneers, steward, postal, artisan (wood, painter, tailor, metallurgy, musician), equipment repairer, kennel man, washer man, mess keeper and house keeper.

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification required for Soldier Tradesman is not so high and confusing. Candidates who have completed their 10th class or hold an ITI diploma can apply for Tradesman all trade posts except syce, mess keeper, and house-keeper.

Candidates who are applying for Soldier Tradesman’s syce, mess keeper, and house-keeper posts, must complete their 8th standard from an authorized board.

Age Limit

Candidates applying for Soldier Tradesman of all trades should not be less than 17 ½ years and not more than 23 years. If any candidate’s age could not find fit to this age limit, it will directly disqualify from the recruitment process. Candidate’s age will figure out from the date given on the documents until the day of Bharti.

Minimum Age: 17 ½ years

Maximum Age: 23 years


The physical standards (height, weight & chest) of candidates are set according to the six different regions of country. Here are the details:

Western Himalayan region

  • The minimum height of the candidate must be 163 cm.
  • The required chest and weight is 77 cms and 48 kgs, minimum.

Eastern Himalayan region

  • Candidate’s height should be 160 cms.
  • Chest and wight of this region candidates should be 77 cms and 48 kgs.

Western plains region

  • The required height for this region 170 cms (minimum).
  • The weight required is 50 kgs and chest is 77 cms.

Eastern plains region

  • Candidate’s of this region has 169 cms height, 77 cms chest and 50 kgs weight, required.

Central region

  • The minimum height for the candidates in central region is 168 cms.
  • The required weight is 50 kgs.
  • The required chest is 77 cms.

Southern region

  • Candidates height should not less than 166 cms.
  • The required chest is 77 cms.
  • The required weight is 50 kgs.

Candidates who are having some special certificates like sports, relation and poor areas certificates, can get concessions in their height, weight and chest. Here are the details:

Sports certificate

  • Height: 2 cm
  • Weight: 5 kg
  • Chest: 3 cm

Relation Certificate

  • Height: 2 cm
  • Weight: 2 kg
  • Chest: 1 cm

Poor areas candidates

  • Weight: 2 kg
